Zulu Names

I dont remember if i ever sent these to you guys. If i did then please forgive me. If not then here they are:

Jennifer= white or fair = Mpofu [pronounced im-po-foo]
Lynn = lake = Ugu (there arent any lakes near Zululand so its a really deep word nobody knows) [pronounced oo-goo but the g sound is harder almost like a k sound]

Nathan = gift from God = Siphosenkhosi [ see-po-sen-ko-see] or just Sipho (gift)
James = there isnt a Zulu equivakent to James or Jacob, they are just proper names in the Bible

Keri = dark or dark haired = Mnyama [ m-n-ya-ma] (that probably didnt help much)

Kelly = female warrior = Qhawekazi [q-ah-way-ka-zee]
Marie = bitter = Muncu [moon-c-oo]

Heather = flower = Mbali [im-ball-ee]
Lori = famous strength = Amandla [a-mahn-dla]

A few notes. Mbali and Sipho are very common names. Mpofu is known. But the rest are pretty rare. To make a "q" sound you have to click. Put your tongue on the roof of your mouth and cluck by breaking the vacuum between the tongue and palette. A "c" is also a click which you make by putting your tongue to your teeth and doing the same action. Almost like a granny waving her finger at a small child telling them not to do whatever they were doing. "dl" you just have to pronounce at the same time the d and the l.

This week we went to Margate for PDay ... thats why i didnt get to email then ... but i got some really cool photos of me and Elder Tandberg with a big python that we saw at a snake park. It was a big one! But i didnt bring the camera with so i cant send them today ...

The kids all asked me a while ago to find Zulu names for them ... but i still need to know what each of their names mean in english so that i can have a Zulu translation. I need both the first and middle name incase some dont make sense as a name. Like my first name means manly and the closest thing in Zulu is just man "indoda" but thats not much of a name. My middle name however does have a translation thats more of a Zulu name ... a warrior is "ibutho" but the plural form 'Mabutho" is a good zulu name. So ask anyone who wants one to let me know.

Amanzimtoti is a coastal town just south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. According to local legend, when the Zulu king Shaka led his army down the south coast on a raid against the Pondos in 1828, he rested on the banks of a river. When drinking the water, he exclaimed "Kanti amanzi mtoti" (isiZulu: "So, the water is sweet"). The river came to be known as Amanzimtoti ("Sweet Waters"). The Zulu word for "sweet" is actually mnandi, but, as Shaka's mother had the name Nandi, he invented the word toti to replace mnandi out of respect not to wear out her name. Locals frequently refer to the town as "Toti".

Amanzimtoti is renowned for its warm weather and its beaches. It is a popular tourist destination, particularly with surfers, and the annual sardine run attracts many to the beaches. Many South Africans flock here during the summer to get away from it all. Its location on the N2 national highway, approximately 11 km from Durban International Airport makes it a convenient destination. It has several malls, arcades and a water park.

Amanzimtoti made the international news when on December 23rd, 1985, during the peak of the Christmas shopping season, MK cadre Andrew Sibusiso Zondo detonated a bomb in a rubbish bin at the Sanlam shopping centre in an act of anti-Apartheid terrorism. Five people died in the blast and more than forty were injured.

There are well established sports facilities in Amanzimtoti, situated at Hutchison park. Included is a tennis-, squash-, cricket-, rugby-, soccer-, cycling- and bowls club.

Arbour Crossing, a major new shopping development, opened on November 20th 2008, with a Pick 'n Pay Hypermarket being the key tenant. The Galleria, a second development in the same area, is due to open in 2009.

Missionary Monday

Actually, I don't have any missionary news to share. Andrew did send us a REALLY great conversion story about Mama Mathe's father-in-law, who was a Zulu warrior, but they are trying to get it published in the Ensign so I can't share it with you :( But if it gets published just KNOW that I read it first! lol

Instead here are some Zulu words for you:
Sawubonani = Welcome
Hambe Kahle = Go well (sorta like goodbye)
Andrew's Zulu name is Ubhejane, which means rhinocerous. It was given to him by a Zulu family. Apparently that's how he plays soccer - like a big American football player barging his way through with no finesse! lol Makes me want to watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks!
